What is NHIF?

NHIF-The National Hospital Insurance Fund is a state corporation in Kenya that provides health insurance to Kenyans. The National Hospital Insurance Fund Act, 2019 established it in 1966 and governs it.

Requirements for application of NHIF

  • National ID: You must have a valid national ID.
  • Passport-size photo: You must provide a passport-sized photo.
  • Evidence of income is required. Specifically, you must furnish substantiation of your income, including items like a payslip or alternatively, a letter from your employer.
  • Application form: You must fill out an application form.
  • Application fee: You must pay an application fee.

How to apply 

  1. Go to the NHIF website.
  2. Click on the “Online Registration” link.
  3. Create an account and log in.
  4. Complete the application form.
  5. Upload the required documents.
  6. Pay the application fee.
  7. Submit your application.

After you have submitted your application, they will process it, and subsequently, issue you a membership card within a few weeks.

Cost of application

The cost of applying for NHIF is Ksh. 200 for individuals and Ksh. 400 for families. You can pay the application fee through M-Pesa. The Cyber fee will cost you Ksh 200 only.

What are the benefits of membership?

All Kenyans employed in the formal sector must mandatorily obtain membership, without exception. Additionally, self-employed Kenyans and those without employment can also join.

How do I use my card?

To use your card, you must present it to the healthcare provider when you seek medical attention. The healthcare provider will then bill them for the services you received. They will then reimburse the healthcare provider.

What happens if I lose my card?

If you lose your card, you can apply for a replacement card at any of their offices. You will need to provide your national ID and a copy of your lost card.

What happens if I don’t pay my premiums?

If you don’t pay your premiums, you will be suspended. This means that you will not be able to access funds and healthcare services. You can be reinstated to the program if you pay your outstanding premiums.

How do I check my balance?

You can check your balance by sending a text message with the format [ID {space} Your ID Number] e.g. (ID 12345678) to 1550, by dialing *155#, using the ‘My NHIF’ App which can be downloaded from Google Play or App Store or the NHIF Selfcare Platform.

How do I update my details?

You can update your details by visiting any of their offices or by using the  Selfcare Platform. You will need to provide your national ID and your new details.
